For the purposes of this tutorial, we will assume that your domain is called "my.domain.com". This tutorial will lead you through the steps required to make the files in your "public" folder viewable to others on the web, at the address "http://www.my.domain.com/". You may have already performed some of these steps.
-
Purchase "my.domain.com" from a domain name reseller
-
Configure the CNAME record for "www.my.domain.com" to point to web.messagingengine.com - if you don't know what this means, then forward this request to the organisation that is hosting your DNS records. This may be the organisation you bought the domain from. (more info)
-
Login to the FastMail.FM web interface
-
Click on the "Options" link at the top of the screen
-
Click on the "Virtual Domains" link under "Settings"
-
Type your domain name (e.g. "my.domain.com") as a new virtual domain (in the lower half of the screen), and click the "Add" button next to your new domain (more info)
-
Click on the "Done" button at the top of the screen
-
Click on the "Files" link at the top of the screen
-
Select 'Create Subfolder' from the Action: dropdown in the top left of the screen. In the box that pops up (New folder name) type 'public' without the quotes. Press the 'Do' button next to the Action dropdown. (more info)
-
Click on "Websites" at the top right of the screen.
-
Check the settings in the 'Create New Website' section at the bottom of the page. The defaults should be fine for a standard website, but you may wish to change the display so people can't see a list of your files when they go to a page without an index.html. You can also choose to add a password which can be used to access the page. We recommend that you do not use your email password for this.
-
Click 'Add Website' at the bottom of the page. This will create the default website pointing to your 'public' folder. The website will appear in the list at the top of the screen. Click on the website link to open the site in a new window and check that you get a screen saying "Listing of [your website name]".
-
Click on the "Done" button at the top of the screen
You should now be able to access the contents of your public folder using the address http://my.domain.com/. If you also want the address http://www.my.domain.com/ to work, go back to the Websites screen and create another website, but in the first text box on the 'Website' line in the 'Add New Website' section type the text 'www'. After you have clicked 'Add Website' you should see an entry for http://www.my.domain.com/ in your website listing at the top of the page. Click 'Done' again.
Note: The information above should be sufficient to get you up and running with a web site in your own domain. However, there are lots of different ways to tweak the available settings. It is strongly recommended that when you have some time, you follow all the "more info" links above to find out more about how to configure things.
Here are some examples of the photo gallery:
As a filmstrip: http://testphotos2.robm.fastmail.fm/
As slides: http://testphotos.robm.fastmail.fm/
To use the FastMail.FM Photo Gallery:
-
Upload your photos into a folder in your File Storage area
-
Go to 'Websites', and create a new website for that folder (perhaps "photos.yourusername.fastmail.fm"), specifying Publish As: "Photo gallery - slides" or "Photo gallery - film strip"
That's it! Now other people can view your photos by going to: photos.yourusername.fastmail.fm.
You can also specify comments for your photos by going to the folder where your photos are in file storage, selecting the Action: "View as photos", and then clicking "Do". Now you should be able to enter a comment for each picture.
